"Progressive" luggage label featuring LNER passenger locomotive, collected by the Barraclough family.

Luggage labels became popular in the 19th Century as the general public took to travelling more frequently due to the advent of trains and ships becoming more passenger friendly. People suddenly wanted to see what was beyond their front door, travelling mainly for leisure.

It later became a fashion statement to have collected labels from hotels stayed in or places visited as they were thought to identify a cultured person of means.
