Beauty

Kathleen Vermeulen posing in swimwear for the Canadian press prior to a 1940's Canadian beauty contest.

Beauty contests were popular in the USA since the mid-nineteenth century. The original idea evolved from choosing a festival queen for special day events such as the 'May Queen' or 'Carnival Queen'.

The lady in the picture, Kathleen Vermeulen, was a Canadian war bride and won a 'Queen of the GI Brides' beauty contest before going on to participate in other beauty contests such as the one mentioned above, in Canada.
